Trump: Transgender individuals 'can't serve' in US military

US President Donald Trump says transgender individuals can't serve in "any limit" in the military.



He tweeted that he had counseled with military specialists and refered to "gigantic medicinal expenses and disturbance".

The Obama organization chose a year ago to enable transgender individuals to serve straightforwardly in the military.

Yet, in June, Defense Secretary James Mattis consented to a six-month delay in the enlistment of transgender individuals.

The Pentagon said this was to permit the distinctive branches of the military to "survey their increase designs and give contribution on the effect to the status and lethality of our strengths".

A few Republicans have voiced resistance to enabling transgender individuals to serve by any stretch of the imagination.

'Terrible approach'

The US military's prohibition on transparently gay and lesbian servicemen and ladies - known as "Don't ask don't tell" - was lifted in 2011.

Aaron Belkin, executive of the Palm Center, a main research organization which thinks about sex and sexuality in the military, told the BBC that Mr Trump's choice would drive transgender troops to essentially live as gays and lesbians did under "Don't ask, don't tell".

"Try not to ask, don't tell was a deplorable approach that hurt the military for just about two decades," Mr Belkin said.

"It's not clear why the president would need to bring it back now for transgender troops, when all the proof recommends that comprehensive arrangement benefits the military and segregation harms the military."
