Sunshine Stars goalkeeper David Ariyo has been handed a 12-match suspension for "breaching the NPFL Framework and Rules."
Ariyo was charged by the League Management Company (LMC), which oversees the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), for assaulting an assistant referee during his team's 2-1 home loss to Plateau United on 7 June.
He will now miss most of the remainder of the season and will only be available for Sunshine Stars' last two matches against FC Ifeanyiubah and Remo Stars.
The goalkeeper's club also got charged for breaching the league rules for failing to control their players, leading to the assault of one of the assistant referees.
"Sunshine Stars were also charged for breaches of Rule C9 and C1.2.1.6 while goalkeeper, Ariyo was charged for assault on an assistant referee contrary to Rule C11 of the NPFL Framework and Rules," the LMC stated on Tuesday.
The Akure Gunners have been further expelled from their home ground, the Akure Stadium, and will play their home matches at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, more than 200 kilometres from their abode.
The troubled club will play at the stadium in Ijebu-Ode indefinitely, according to the LMC.
Sunshine Stars were also fined a total of N1 million including N250 000 being compensation for the assaulted assistant referee.
In May, Sunshine Stars were sanctioned by the LMC for an infraction during their league game at home against Lobi Stars. The club had their stadium closed to fans indefinitely, got fined N5 million and got hit with a suspended three-point deduction.
Sunshine Stars, fourth from bottom, will now play hosts to Gombe United in a relegation six-pointer at the Dipo Dina Stadium this Sunday.
